Common Impairment: Diabetes
The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released cancer statistics for 2025, which suggest that more than 2 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, and more than 600,000 people will die of cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States overall and the leading cause among people younger than 85 years.
If your client has been diagnosed with cancer and they already have coverage, nothing will change as long as they continue to pay the policy premiums; however, if your client wants to purchase a new life insurance policy and has been diagnosed with cancer recently or in the past, it’s likely there will be obstacles.
When meeting with clients who have cancer histories and to get in front of these potential obstacles, please make sure to gather the following information:
- Type of cancer
- Stage and grade of cancer
- Date of diagnosis
- Family history of cancer?
- Cancer treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, etc.).
- Treatment completion date
- Recurrence?
Please note, depending on the type/staging of cancer, additional information may be requested to ensure we’re finding the best option for your client. The insurance company will likely want to see favorable lab results, medical records, and pathology reports, as well.
